First half results

25 June 2010

We are now six months through 2010, and so far – appropriately enough for World Cup year - it's been a half year of two halves (if you see what I mean).

At the beginning of the year it did appear that, for some brokers at least, the recessionary clouds were finally lifting. There were deals being written; and reasons to be cheerful; and, at last, some light on the horizon.

Then there was the half-time hiatus caused by the general election, but this wasn't a problem; everyone knew it was coming and a small slowdown was expected.

Then of course, there was the less than clear cut result which, even though widely predicted, seemed to catch people on the hop which didn't help. And now we have the new austerity; and brokers are reporting that things are just as bad as they were last year.

In a few days time, the first ever Commercial Finance Expo will take place at the NEC in Birmingham. Although the intention is not to bring back the market singlehandedly, there are still plenty of active lenders, all wanting to talk to brokers, all under one roof.

From an initial target of 500 delegates, we are delighted that we have now signed up over 700.

So despite the current slowdown at the end of this half-year, we have a picture of an industry which is still robust and still fighting. Which is at least one good reason to celebrate, even if England do get knocked out of the World Cup (again!).
